In 2024 alone, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center received 859,532 reports of online crime, with losses exceeding $16 billion, a 33% increase from 2023—and the top threats affecting families included phishing, extortion, and personal data breaches.  Phishing remains the most common attack on individuals, accounting for 23% of all complaints reported to the FBI in 2024.  Families are especially vulnerable because cybercriminals target everyday online activities—email, banking, school portals, games, and social apps—where a single mistaken click can expose personal information or financial accounts.
